Factfile
ONE – I’m too short for my width.
TWO – I knew Desmond Llewellyn.
THREE – I rescue hamsters.
What do you do?
I test software before release to end users to ensure it is up to company standards.
How did you get into that?
I had a life changing event 7 years after starting software testing that made me decide to make a proper career.
I fell into a job testing POS documentation, and went from there.
I’ve been in my current role for 20 years.
Do you have a mentor or anyone who supports you? Has that always been the case?
My husband has always thought more of my capabilities than I have. After a particularly brutal job where I was bullied very badly, I wanted to quit testing. My husband supported my decision, but also encouraged me to apply for testing roles, just in case. I ended up starting a new team for a company that had been going for 2 years with no testing in place.
Who inspires you?
Dave Pelzer.
He overcame unimaginable odds to become a kind and successful man. He encourages others to face their own demons and lead a rich and full life.
What do you wish you’d known 10 years ago? What difference would knowing that have made?
I wish I had known I have Borderline Personality Disorder. Having the right treatment and management methods would have made my previous role so much easier.
What advice do you have for girls or women considering a tech role?
Be yourself. Men and women are different. We shouldn’t feel pressured to be the same. Work from your own strengths.
